There is no origin story that starts in a studio.

It starts in a dorm room in the early nineties, where industrial music and the first waves of techno were rewriting what sound could do to a human nervous system. Depeche Mode. Erasure. Then harder things. Then The Prodigy. Then one night in a field on the Fourth of July that nobody who was there has ever fully explained to anyone who wasn't.

There was a bar once. Live music. Reggae but not reggae — something underneath it, a groove so deep and so physical it bypassed the brain entirely. Hips moved before the mind agreed. That feeling has been the target ever since. Most music doesn't get close. Some does. The search continues.

Trance came late, the way the best things do. A colleague mentioned it. The seed was planted. Nothing grew immediately.

Then a highway. Mountains rising in the dark on both sides. More stars than cars. A radio scan that landed somewhere unexpected and stayed there. A voice over a frequency introducing a show that had been running for years without being heard. That night it was heard. Something locked in permanently.

The show became a ritual. The drives became the education. Thousands of miles of asphalt and uplifting trance and the particular kind of thinking that only happens when the road is long and the music is right.

TOOL was always there. Is always there. Complexity as a standard. Settle for nothing less.
